After the initial few weeks of absolute abstinence from downloading music, I realized that I can't listen to Oingo Boingo and Sleater Kinney the rest of my life.
(well, I could, but... yeah.)
This morning I have been exploring the world of music that the artists want me to download, for free.

This is working out quite well.

and I've been using songbird as an interface for this whole process.
I am not sure about songbird still. I sort of get how it works, but I know that if I sat my grandparents they'd have no idea what was going on.
I suspect the same would be true for a lot of people I know (if working an iPod is hard...).

regardless of that, I prefer this setup (philosophically) a lot more than the pay to rent sites like zune.

Agreed. At first I thought it was a bloated iTunes clone.
I just wish it was better at culling embedded mp3s from last.fm.
